These two materials are both types of nylon, but they have distinct properties that make them suitable for different applications. What is PA66?
PA66, or Polyamide 66, is another type of nylon, but it is polymerized using hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid. Compared to PA6, PA66 has higher melting points, greater strength, and better dimensional stability. It is particularly known for its excellent wear resistance and ability to withstand harsh conditions. PA66 is often used in more demanding applications, where performance and durability are critical.
What is PA6?
PA6, or Polyamide 6, is a synthetic polymer commonly known as nylon 6. It is created through the polymerization of caprolactam and has a high level of toughness, flexibility, and good chemical resistance. PA6 is often chosen for applications that require materials to have high impact resistance, low friction, and flexibility, while still maintaining a good balance of strength.
Key Differences Between PA6 and PA66
Chemical Structure and Polymerization
PA6 is made from caprolactam, while PA66 is made from hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid. This difference in the chemical structure influences the overall properties of each material.


Melting Point
PA66 has a higher melting point (about 265°C) compared to PA6 (around 220°C). This makes PA66 more suitable for high-temperature applications where thermal stability is essential.
PA66 is generally stronger and stiffer than PA6. It offers better tensile strength, which makes it ideal for parts that will undergo heavy loads or mechanical stress.
PA6 tends to absorb more moisture than PA66. This can be a concern in applications where dimensional stability is critical, as moisture absorption can lead to swelling and a decrease in mechanical properties. PA66 is less affected by moisture, maintaining its strength and performance.
PA66 outperforms PA6 in terms of wear resistance, making it a better choice for components that experience friction or contact with other materials.
